Developmental Screening

So, me being the paranoid mother that I am, scheduled a developmental screening for Bridger because I was a little worried about his speech, or lack there of. I mean, he is two and he was barely saying any words. Well, of course as soon as I made the appointment he started blurting out all kinds of words...I kept the appointment anyway because they recommend having one before they are three just for general purposes.

I'm happy to report that Bridger is right where he is supposed to be. Completely normal little boy.

We did learn some interesting things. There were 4 areas that they screened: communication, fine motor, gross motor, and problem solving. The lady said that most kids develop one area and then move on to the next. Little boys usually develop the motor skills and problem solving before moving on to speech. That is exactly where Bridger was. She said, he may be on the low end of normal, but because he has is motor skills down, she wasn't worried at all. Set my little mind at ease.
He is saying quite a bit. Usually only at home or around people he is comfortable. Some of the things he says are: where's dad/mom/insert anyone or thing, what's that, football, drink, car, hi, bye. I that is about it.

And you can't forget he is a BOY. I wouldn't have thought much of that except I had Ashlee first and was freaking out when Gabe was 2 and hardly talking. Don't worry. I bet he'll be one of the smartest ones in school. Gabe and Braydens teachers are always commenting on how attentive they are and putting things together more than the other kids. Niether one spoke until after they were two.

My experience with kids is, (I know, I have had sooooo much experience, because I have 2 kids!) is that they do things in their own time. I was so worried about both of my kids, but it really doesn't matter in the big scheme of things. Most kids get it eventually, and you can't push them into doing something when they're not ready. It was probably a good thing to take him in, to put your mind at ease though. I've missed your blogs!

I was quite concerned with Dallin when he turned two also because of his speech... All I really had to compare him to were girl cousins his age, and Bryson, who at 18 months knew 80+ words... My doctor said it was a little early for a developmental screening for Dallin at 2, but that's fine because I am so amazed how far he's come in the past few months- sure, a lot of the words still sound the same, but he's really come a long way in just 4 months... I'm sure you'll be surprised at Bridgers progress in a few months too.
